Abstract:The objective of this study was to identify and evaluate the berry shape traits of grape germplasm resources, investigate the variations in varieties characteristics and traits among different grape cultivars with distinct berry shapes, and validate the expression patterns of genes associated with berry shape. This study systematically investigated on the berry traits of 666 germplasm resources of grapes, and statistically analyzed the vertical and horizontal diameter, single berry weight and number of seed. According to the standards and description methods of the Description and Data Standard for Grape (Vitis) , the berry shapes of cultivated varieties were categorized into 11 types: round, obloid, oval shape, nearly round, long oval, broad lipsoid, obovoid, ovoid, curved shape, chicken heart shape and waist shape. The cultivated varieties were mainly round and broad lipsoid, followed by nearly round. The berry shape of wild varieties were basically round, only 4 broad lipsoid and 1 chicken heart shape. Grape berry shape could generally be identified by appearance, but some berry shape, such as round and near round, should be described and determined by referring to the vertical and horizontal diameter. Vitis vinifera L. and V. vinifera × V. labrusca dominated the grape varieties, accounting for more than 88% of the varieties, and the number of V. vinifera L. varieties weremore than twice that of V. vinifera × V. labrusca Grapes has a wide range of uses, with fresh consumption and winemaking being the primary ones. Wine grapes had fewer berry shape types, except round and broad lipsoid, with only a small quantity of nearly round, long oval, ovoid and chicken heart shape varieties. Statistical analysis of grape individual berry weight across different berry shapes revealed that the average individual berry weight of round and chicken heart grape was less, and that of oval shape and obovoid grape was heavier. The regression analysis of grape vertical and transverse diameters against individual berry weight showed that the regression equations for most grape shapes had good fit. All regression equations were positive coefficients, indicating that the individual berry weight of different grape shapes was positively correlated with the vertical and transverse diameters of grapes. The number of seeds ranged from 0 to 6. Among these, grape varieties with 2 seeds are the most common, followed by 3 seeds. Varieties with 5 and 6 seeds were the least common and were primarily found in round grapes. qRT-PCR analysis of grape berry shape candidate genes was performed, the genes VvFUL1A and VvSUN might be important candidate genes regulating grape berry shape This study explored the varieties characteristics of different fruit shapes and preliminarily understood the character differences of different berry shapes, which provide a certain reference for berry shape and future grape breeding research.
